Today is the day

Psalm 118: 22-24

To be fair, my dislike is nothing new. Ever since I was a child in school, the idea of deadlines was something I despised. Whether it was homework assignments or studying for a test, I didn’t like the deadline. In fact, my way of handling it was to wait until the last possible moment to get it done. I would like to say that I have gotten better at deadlines over the years. However, there is no certainty that would be accurate.

Today is deadline day. There are conference reports that are due today. I have done all the work required to ensure that everyone got their reports in on time at the church. Today is the day to make sure that I have my reports finalized. I am still not quite sure when I will get started this morning looking over the reports. It is not the amount of work that is making me delay. It is simply the fact that there is a timetable. I spend time thinking about the timetable and not about the actual work that needs to be done. No matter what I need to get done, I realize the work still needs to get done.

Reading the Psalm from today gives me a different way to start the day. What would it look like if I remembered, “The Lord has done it this very day;

    let us rejoice today and be glad.” Let us rejoice that God is at work. Let us have joy because this day belongs to God. The deadlines will come and go, but God will still be God.

You might not be facing your own deadline today, but you are dealing with something. Whatever it is, don’t allow it to steal your joy. Remember God still is God, and for that, we rejoice.
