Bridging the Gap

God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day. (Genesis 1:31)

I was driving home from Virginia many years ago, where I had stopped to see my cousin. The GPS took me over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel on the way home. I had never driven this structure before, which was quite the experience. Not only was it a bridge over a vast body of water, but it also incorporated a tunnel underneath that same body of water. It was pretty intimidating.

I was thinking about that trip today while I was teaching Bible study. We were spending time in the Gospel of John, and I was emphasizing how the author structured the Gospel. He attempted to connect the story of Jesus with the creation and Law. Jesus essentially becomes the bridge between the old and new covenants. Yet, the bridge can sometimes seem confusing and intimidating.

Yet, if we start with the story of Creation, we can see all God created called very good. What Good News that is for all of us! No matter what the world may say or do, we matter. God sees my worth no matter how I feel on a particular day.

Bridges exist to help us get to the other side. The story of Jesus allows us to bridge over the fear, confusion, and doubt we might be facing into God’s preferred future for us. I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to see where Jesus leads me next.
