I always used to “be the shoe”. It was my piece and I didn’t want anyone else to use it. I liked it because it just seemed like me and it was long before I had my fascination/compulsion with flip-flops. I always wanted to be outside running and playing. If i was inside it was my connection to the outside world.
I would proudly put my shoe on the starting point and gather my money and wait to see who would roll the dice to start the game. After all, the point of the game was on that very first square of the well-known game board. Go!
This was the launching point. You did not simply stay on that space throughout the game. You needed to move and but property and gather resources. It all started with Go! Every token on the board would have their own plan and idea of how best to operate but everyone would have to Go! See, that is the point.
This morning’s reading from the Gospel of Luke, includes a wonderful story that we know so well from Chapter 7. It is the story of the woman who anoints Jesus’ feet. This is one of many encounters that people have with Jesus in which he heals them or forgives them their sins. It is not different from many of the others in that regard and I think that is what struck me this morning.
Jesus heals or forgives and then he sends them to Go! They can’t stay where they are. They have a path to take and a life to live. They need to Go! with their changed lives and be salt and light in the world. In this way the message of Jesus continues to spread in many places and in many ways. They becomes the storytellers and it is their transformed lives that are the proof.
This is what Jesus wants for us, we are called to be those storytellers. Are you ready? It is time to Go!
