New Testament Reading Challenge Day 12
Today’s Reading Matthew 19-24
We are in Day 12 of a 40 day read through the New Testament challenge today. The first 14 days of readings will be listed at the end of this post
***End Note ***
You really can’t seemingly help it. We may have good intentions but over time it just sort of happens, we collect stuff! We hesitate to get rid of things or perhaps we may need to “later” but we know later never really comes. This happens at our houses, places of business, and even in the church. We have a compulsion. We also need to accept that sometimes the stuff we start hoarding can also be bad habits.
I think this becomes evident in a section of today’s reading. Jesus walks in to the temple and witnesses what happens when we lose focus. The situation in the temple was a long time coming. People had set up their wares to help out those who needed to make sacrifices. Yet, over time things seemingly became lax, what used to be holy now had become commonplace. Jesus did not like what he saw. Perhaps what he saw were people who were not focused on God but on their own gain.
Lent came be a time for us to figure out what holy things have become commonplace for us. What good things have become junk? What spiritual practices have we stored for a later that seemingly has never come? What can we do to clean out the junk and refocus on the holy?
I think the first step is honest self inventory. Am I setting time aside for God? Am I spending time in prayer? How is my worship life? What things are taking most of my time, money, and energy? What changes can I make?
Simple questions and perhaps not so simple answers but the work we do will hopefully stop the need for a serious angry “temple cleansing” in the future.
