***End Note ***
In our lives, we all go through seasons. Things change over time and our priorities shift. We look at the world differently as the seasons come and go. Part of my struggle has always been trying to keep up with these changes. It takes me some time to get prepared for the season we are in sometimes and it is not always easy to see the signs that point to the upcoming season change.
Yet, there are those moments that ring loud and clear and you can’t possibly miss. I experienced one of those moments when I read and really understood this passage ,which was part of today’s reading, in a different way. In whatever particular season of ministry I was in at that moment, I was focused on the wrong things. I was looking for fruit in the midst of paperwork and “churchy” stuff.
Yet, this passage was a wake up call. John the Baptist’s disciples went to Jesus for some answers. John wanted to know if Jesus the one or had they been wasting their time. Jesus didn’t point to big crowds that had been following him. He did not point to his own pedigree. He showed the fruit! He pointed to all the transformation that had been happening all around. People’s lived were changed and they were saved. THIS! This was my sign of changing seasons that I needed then and I need again.
Sometimes we get so busy in the details and the nuances of what we are doing that we miss the miracles all around us. Jesus wants changed hearts not boxes checked on forms. Jesus wants mercy showed not showy church ritual. Lent is the perfect time to remember this for me. It is a time for me to remember what Jesus wants and find ways to live that out.
Can you feel it? The seasons are changing.
