New Testament Reading Challenge Day 9
Today’s Reading Matthew 1-7
We are in Day 9 of a 40 day read through the New Testament challenge today. The first 14 days of readings will be listed at the end of this post
***End Note ***
When I was a little boy, I spent a lot of time playing with things like blocks, Lincoln Logs, and Legos. I tried to construct elaborate structures but I never really got the hang of it. I think in part it was because I was more concerned with getting the building as tall as I could as fast as I could.
I never had the patience to plan out what I was doing. I also wouldn’t take the time to build a solid foundation that would support the size of the structure that I was trying to create. While I was reading today’s selection from the Gospel of Matthew, I felt as if Jesus was speaking directly to me.
My wife shares with me that I need to be more patient. I have a tendency to get excited about something and go with it. Sometimes that means that I do not wait for others to fully buy in or I do not wait for a real productive discussion of things. I am getting better but it is a struggle.
The words from Jesus today are a reminder of a need for our foundation to be secure. It does not matter how pretty the project is or how many bells or whistles it has if the first bog obstacle will top everything in its tracks. Our walk with God is like that as well. Part of the rationale of reading through the New Testament together during Lent is helping to build upon our foundation. Spending time with God in scripture reading and prayer is both a perfect Lenten Discipline and a perfect opportunity to build upon the world God is already doing on our lives.
Let’s get building.
