I am sure that you are like me in that we have listened to a lot of pleas in churches about needs around the world. It seems like sometimes the easiest thing to do is either throw a check in the plate or to tune out because after a while it just gets overwhelming. I have realized over time that giving to a need is always a good thing but I must always fight the feeling of needing to tune out.
As I did the reading today, especially these verses, I remembered the first time we took a group of people to the Camden Neighborhood Center(CNC). The CNC is a great organization that was really working to combat food scarcity, poverty, and homelessness in the city of Camden. We went one Saturday morning with a group from church and were just overwhelmed as we took the tour before we got to work.
The day continued and we got involved with a few different projects as lunch was being prepared for folks in the community. When it came time for dinner almost 100 people showed up for lunch. Many of them were homeless and many others were just doing whatever was needed to survive until the next day. It was an overwhelming experience.
I wasn’t needed to feed the meal so I went and sat down with a few of the people eating and eventually began to engage in conversation with them. the conversation continued and it was then that I was reminded once again that behind every pair of eyes that I see there exists a person created in the Image of God. It was a powerful reminder to me to take the time needed to connect with people and share God’s grace, love, and mercy whenever and wherever I can.
Every day gives us that opportunity if we look for it. Are you ready to look today?
