***End Note ***
We love a good conspiracy theory, w really do. Occasionally I will spend time googling various conspiracies. I read about them and often shake my head and then end up watching ESPN. It is often fascinating to see how people rally around certain things in their desire to prove some grand conspiracy. This last election cycle, and to be quite honest Facebook, have brought to our national attention this thing we now call “fake news”.
This is not a new phenomenon by any stretch however. We have been dealing with false narratives since the beginning of time. When things go wrong we often search for some reason why and often want to blame some unseen force. The force may be defined as the alt-right, leftists, socialists, fascists, illuminati, and many other names we all have heard. Over the last 9 years often times the force has been described as Obama and Trump as well.
Today’s reading reminded me of these forces as I was reminded of the “man of lawlessness.” In our world it is so easy to lose focus of what is happening all around us and focus on a person as the reason why things are so messed up. Now I am not diminishing the pain that some people can cause and the evil that can be done in some people’s name. I am simply suggesting that we need to make sure that we don’t stop reading Paul’s writing at the “man of lawlessness”. We need to keep reading at Paul’s admonitions, “So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the teachings we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter.”
Things can get ugly and they can be messy and sometimes people do evil things. We need to be able to stand against those things and events but not be so preoccupied that we forget to “stand firm and hold fast”. For me, this means remembering who I am and that is a child of God. It is a reminder that no matter what else happens I am part of something much bigger than myself and my own fears and desires.
I will never allow hate cause me to act in a certain way instead I will rely on the love and grace given to me by God to direct me in all that I do. I will not let fear cause me to demean the humanity of others. I will keep pressing forward confident in the fact that God has planted us in this place and there is a world that needs to be shown that love not hate is the ideal. We can’t do that focusing on the latest boogeyman we need to let God’s light chase all our boogeymen away.
