New Testament Reading challenge Day 4

Today’s Reading Mark 13-16

We are in Day 4 of a 40 day read through the New Testament challenge today. The first seven days of readings will be listed at the end of this post

***End Note ***

Today’s reading takes us to the end of the Gospel of Mark. Hopefully, you are still on course after these first few days. Every time I read this Gospel, I can’t help but be struck by the scene at the tomb. Faced with the reality of a risen Jesus the women left the tomb speechless. They could not comprehend what they had seen and experienced.

If we are honest, we often take the idea and reality of the risen Jesus not as seriously as we should. We walk around as if what happened all those years ago is no big deal. We live our lives as if what happened in Jerusalem has no impact upon us today. Well at least I assume that is what is happening.

Let’s be honest, if we took the empty tomb seriously would we spend so much time on trivial things? Would we spend time bickering with people over stuff that has no eternal value at all while people are starving? Would we ignore all those who are being abused by people and systems? Would we ignore those who are being excluded because of race, religion, sexuality, age, income?

Instead, too often, we put away talk of Jesus until Sunday mornings when it is convenient. We don’t let the Jesus talk and Jesus walk interfere with our “real lives”. We are content with just putting in time on Sunday and going on with our week like normal.

The woman walked away from the tomb in silence because they were overwhelmed.

What’s my excuse?
