Mirror, Mirror, what do you see?

Lenten Reflection on James 1:22-25

Mirrors are funny things. Standing before one, we can see ourselves in a moment in time. We can see how our hair looks or if our tie is straight. One thing we also need to remember, if we are looking at ourselves in the mirror than the odds are we are standing still.

Whether you are a parent, politician, pastor, or someone else we all need to move away from the mirror at some point and get going. Words are important but they are not enough. Moving forward requires action and too often we forget that.

Politicians stump.

Pastors preach.

Parents prepare.

This isn’t enough though.  Once the stumping is over we need to move forward. Once the preparation is over action is needed. Once the preaching is over church is required.

Poverty, racism, ageism, sexism, homophobia are among the things that are not changed by words and definitely not changed by gazing into the mirror.

James in his epistle speaks about this:

But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.

Time for talking is coming to an end. The world needs the church, it needs YOU and it needs me to start doing. Are you ready?
